Wonder what a Candi Prambanan is?

This article was inspired by aroengbinang site. He reminds me of beautiful places in my country, and as usual I always attracted by the old mystical place that has history in it, such as Candi Prambanan.

Candi means temple and Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia, located approximately 18 km east of Yogyakarta.

It was built around 850 CE by either Rakai Pikatan, king of the second Mataram dynasty, or Balitung Maha Sambu, during the Sanjaya Dynasty.

The complex consists of several hundreds of small temples, except few of them are large and tall temples. A tale mentioned that there should be 1000 temples to be built at Prambanan, but only 999 were built. The compound is assembled of eight main shrines or candis, and more than 250 surrounding individual candis.

The three main shrines, called Trisakti (Ind. "three sacred places"), are dedicated to the three Gods: Shiva the Destroyer, Vishnu the Keeper and Brahma the Creator.

What is so mystical about Candi Prambanan?

There is a quaint legend/mystical story behind one of the main shrines in Prambanan. Shiva temple who is often referred by the locals as a Candi Lorojonggrang was actually Princess Roro Jonggrang; daughter of King Boko, who cursed into a statue.

According to legend, an extremely powerful man by the name of Bandung Bondowoso desired to wed Roro Jonggrang. However, she did not love him, and decided to set Bandung Bondowoso a task to deter his desire to wed her. Roro Jongggrang declared she would only marry him if he could build a thousand temples in one night. Bandung Bondowoso was a powerful man with supernatural powers and saw no difficulty in the task set. When he had almost completed Roro Jonggrang's request, she panicked and ordered all the women from the villages to the east to burn piles of hay causing light, and make plenty of noise by pounding rice as if the day's work had begun.

These actions caused the situation surrounding the area to be as if the sun was rising. As the cocks began to crow, being fooled also, the supernatural beings assisting Bandung Bondowoso fled in terror of the pending sunlight. When Bandung Bondowoso realized he had been tricked, he flew into a rage and cursed Roro Jonggrang into a stone statue, finishing his task proudly.

If you want to visit Candi Prambanan, don’t forget to watch the Ramayana Ballet which is performed outdoor every year especially on full moon, between the months of May to October. It is a magnificent show with a backdrop setting of the main three temples at night, artistically illuminated after nightfall.

Every guest has been overwhelmed with the amount of photos they receive on a CD-ROM that is taken on charter. Included are your personal surfing photos, just waves, islands, people, sunsets, fishing and general, all supplied to you at the end of your trip on the Mentawais. This at an additional cost of $200.00 US, well appreciated by all guests.

Weather and Wave Reports
A routine by The Captain is reporting swell, high and low pressure and most importantly wave height, on top of his already acquired knowledge of the journey to different breaks throughout the Mentawais.

Snorkeling
The gear aboard “The Irish Mist” is for you to take advantage of to take a dive over at anytime. Snorkelling is a must as every break has a reef !

Fishing
aboard “The Irish Mist” you have top of the range of Rods and Reels with other Fishing tackle including lines, lures etc. Every trip you will hear the fish run with the line as they trawl between surf spots, and you can pull in a great catch of Spanish Mackerel, Mahi Mahi or Tuna, fishes that are part of the menu.

SURFSPOTS EL SALVADOR

When we describe the waves of El Salvador, we break them down into two areas: La Libertad area or the West Coast, and The Wild East. It’s important to remember that El Salvador faces pretty much due south, unlike the rest of Mexico and Central America that faces more westerly.

THE WEST COAST is a mountainous coastline that has amazing point breaks conglomerated in about a 30-mile stretch. The port of La Libertad is about 30 minutes south of the capital city of San Salvador. From La Libertad to the Mizata (the last point on the west coast) there are nine of the best points in Central America, including many beach breaks that can be epic in the right conditions.

Punta Roca offers what is arguably the best surf in Central America, definitely the best right. Its long and hollow (300 yards on a set wave) and booties are recommended for people with sensitive feet. There’s a high level of local talent, so respect the locals and you’ll receive the same respect.

Conchalio is one of El Salvador’s best beach breaks, close to Punta Roca and a definite option for small days. Very hollow and fast when working, usually worth a check in smaller season.

La Paz is the point just inside of Punta Roca. It’s a long slow crumbling wave for beginners but sometimes it can line up for a really nice wave.

La Bocana is one of El Salvador’s few left breaks. It’s a powerful right and left breaking river-mouth for advanced surfers. Very heavy local scene on weekends, best to only surf this during the week for gringos.

La Bocanita is a powerful, intense beach-break for advanced surfers. Expect to see an awesome local grommet scene here. There’s a friendly line-up but be ready for heavy waves and strange currents, usually works in the afternoons.

Sunzal is a very long right point break (300 yards), with a fast take off with perfect carving walls, rare barrels but perfect for all surfers. When this wave is on, it offers some of the best surf in El Salvador. Expect to find great learning waves from November through February.

El Sunzalito is a fast beach break for intermediate to advanced surfers. It usually works in smaller surf conditions and is a good option for the afternoon.

El Zonte is a right hand point with some fast sections. It’s suitable for all surfers. The town is very nice and quiet, with good restaurants and many talented artisans. For an El Salvador surf trip, visiting El Zonte is a must.

El Cocal consists of three right hand points. It’s not as consistent as other surf spots in El Salvador but it’s epic when its on. Crowds are very small, up to only five person line-ups.

K59 is a powerful right hand point over sand and rock bottom. There are very small crowds and usually only on weekends. You will probably have it to yourself during the week.

K61 is a fickle right point that becomes insane when its on. It’s only for advanced surfers. No one else will be surfing here. Be careful because it is very shallow and it’s probably best to make the long paddle from K59 because the rocks are loaded with sea urchins.

Mizata is a right point. This is the most isolated place to surf in El Salvador because it is the farest away from San Salvador.

THE WILD EAST area sees much less traffic than the La Libertad area and offers powerful right hand point breaks ideal for solid intermediate to expert surfers. There are basically no shops or restaurants here except in the hotels so be sure and bring a book and your guitar.

Average wave heights are 5 to 10 feet from March to November. Epic swells reach up to 15 feet. The average crowd per point is 10 to 15 surfers.

Las Flores is a very consistent right point break that works best at low- to mid-tide. There’s a sand and rock bottom that breaks mechanically and has been compared to El Capitan in California with long rides and a hollow outside section.

Punto Mango is a powerful, hollow right point breaking over cobblestone. There is an extremely hollow take-off with a serious barrel at size. Punto Mango is accessible only by boat; there are many crews lined-up on the beach that will take your group.

The all-inclusive El Salvador surf trip includes the boat transport so you can surf both Las Flores and Punta Mango each day.

La Vaca is a right point break with an inside reef exposed at low tide. It offers good unsurfed waves.

There are many other secret and remote spots and miles of beach breaks.

You’ll be watching El Toro peel from Las Flores and wondering why nobody is surfing out there, and probably at some point in your session it will be too much to handle and you will start the paddle, the long paddle.. and it will be worth it.

THE AREA

The lodge is located on the hill just behind Playa Maderas just a few minutes walk from the surf, the main surfing beach for the San Juan area. The town of San Juan del Sur, a 10 minute drive from the lodge, provides restaurants, gift shops, boat tours, jungle canopy rides, nightlife and more.

THE SURF

Maderas is essentially a sand bottom beach break. Though sand filled rock outcroppings on the bottom make for a few consistent main peaks. At times the small point offers a tricky left-hander, requiring a sketchy takeoff over a boil and negotiation of rocks on the inside.

The beach break portion of the wave is softer and slower than most of the nearby beach breaks, making it user-friendly and a favorite option for all levels of experience. When medium to bigger swell arrives waves become faster and more hollow, to the joy of the more advanced surfers in the area.

THE BEACHES

Playa Maderas is one of the few spots with a bona-fide beach scene. Travelers and locals alike come to the beach on a daily basis to enjoy the sun, sand and surf with a few staying overnight in the small hostel or camping out.

They make use of this beach as well as those to the north which offer a little more seclusion and more swimming options. The rocks and reefs here offer great snorkeling. The snorkeling experience ranges from mediocre to excellent here depending on how clear the water is that day.

Going Vacation To Paradise Beach

PARADISE BEACH Jeffreys Bay - Eastern Cape

Paradise Beach is a suburb of JBay, situated next to Aston Bay, tucked into the southern coastline of South Africa, only 7kms west of Jeffreys Bay and 7 kms east of St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape.

Paradise Beach is one of the last coastal towns that promises a relaxing day on a pristine white beach. The name itself, explains it all… it really feels like paradise..

Here you can still find cheap plots, close to the beach. Paradise beach is still underdeveloped and therefor offers excellent investment opportunities.

For shops and restaurants, just cross the lagoon in Aston Bay and take a 10 min drive to JBay.

Paradise Beach is stretched along the coastline, the western, northern and eastern boundaries of Paradise Beach border onto a private nature reserve, farmland and a protected estuary. Paradise Beach has a landing strip, which is used for private aviation only.

Because of his wide and uncrowded beach, it’s also a paradise for windsurfers and kiteboarders with good wind all year round. A not-yet-discovered amazing wind- and kitesurfspot !!!

THE AREA

The area is one of the more established resorts in the Inhambane region of Mozambique. A combination of pristine swimming beaches and reefs that boast abundant sea-life (including the celebrated whale shark and manta ray) make it appealing to tanners and scuba divers alike. Tofo Beach has also become a favourite destination for surfers traveling to Mozambique.

The charming village of Tofino has a laid-back atmosphere and a reputation as a meeting place - A short distance away, Inhambane is a world heritage site, on the ocean side of the peninsula, distinguished by its colonial Portuguese architecture and splendid natural setting.

Tofo is an original fishing village, with locals still living the traditional way. Leggy chickens, pots balancing on hot coals, women with jars on their heads and hoards of excitable children; Tofo’s central craft market is worth a visit, and, if you haven’t mastered Portuguese, gestures and a smile works well for bartering.

Tofo has many smaller settlements dotted around with lots to explore. Indigenous buildings are constructed mostly out of palm. If offered, take the opportunity to try heady palm wine. Mozambiquans are welcoming people who delight in sharing their way of life, from mat weaving to chopping open a coconut with a machete and sipping the sweet milk.

As Tofo is becoming more popular, more restaurants and beach bars arise and more activities are offered. You can now go out deep sea fishing, take surfing lessons and race the beach on horse back. Excursions to Barra Point as well as Inhambane are worth while.

ACTIVITIES

DIVING:
One of Mozambique’s primary attractions is scuba diving. Tofo has 20 reefs in close proximity from which to choose, some of the more popular are Arena, Oasis and Manta Reef. In addition to seeing the diverse array of tropical fish, rays, eels, turtles and colourful coral; you stand a high chance of encountering a Whale Shark. At 12 metres, the Whale Shark is the biggest fish in the world and the pride of Mozambique’s waters. A gentle character and the fact that they live close to the surface, allows a safe approach by divers – ensuring an unforgettable experience.

SURFING:
Inhambane coastline has all the makings of a world-class surf-spot; an ideal mix of warm water, consistent swells, sandy headlands, reefs and often the only competition for wave breaks is dolphins.

There are a wide variety of spots in the vicinity, with the sand point at Tofo beach point being perfect for beginners and long-boarders. Neighbouring Coconut Bay features a splitting peak in the shorebreak. Southern Quissico has a hollow reef break with relatively difficult access.

Jangamo Beach (also called Guinjata Bay) has a crescent-shaped cove with a reef that can create right-handers that peel all the way to the shore. The waves around the corner at Tofino draw the serious surfers, where a shallow reef ledge offers advanced surfers the ride of a lifetime.

THE COTTAGES

The Puri Dajuma cottages are situated around a small cape close to the fishing village of Pekutatan. Each one has a small private garden and provides high-caliber furnished accomodation, built in typical Balinese architectural style.

The cottages are solid structures that open onto a private patio that houses the bathroom and an open-air shower. There are 9 Villa’s or 18 cottage rooms ( each Villa consists of 2 cottages ) and it’s possible to rent a whole Villa for families and friends by opening up the interleading door.
Each Cottage is private and the front terrace was designed to make sure that you can enjoy off-shore sunsets and sunrises, thanks to the cape’s superb location.

On the way from the bungalows through the hotel’s tropical garden, you may drop by the main pool and its wading pond, the restaurant, which serves the best in regional and international cuisine, the spa and its relaxing water massages, and then you can go for a laze on the incredibly beautiful beach.
